In recent year, we have all seen natural disasters increase in both frequency and intensity. People with disabilities have unique needs that must be addressed in planning for and responding to these events. In this workshop, we will discuss a first in the nation partnership between CIL's in California, California Foundation for Independent Living, California utility companies, Anthem Blue Cross and others to provide battery backup power to people with disabilities who experience planned or unplanned power outages, and who rely medical devices that require power. Participants will learn about the rationale for the partnership, how it was created, it's elements and what we have learned to this point. This project has implications for CIL's throughout the nation, as well as the larger Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Response conversation.
